Welcome to Coimbatore, Coimbatore is also known as Kovai. Coimbatore has secured the titles -“ The Manchester of South India” & “The textile capital of south India” due to its potential capabilities. It is the second largest city of TamilNadu with a population hitting 1.25 million and is one of the fastest growing metros in India.                The city is situated on the banks of river Noyyal. Coimbatore existed prior to the 2nd cenury AD as a small village capital called Kongunad until it was brought under chola control in the 2nd or 3rd century Ad by Karikalan, the first early Cholas. The other great rulers of this city were Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Pandiyas, Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara Kings. The small village was also named as 'covanpudur' after the leader of this group, whose name was 'covan'. According ro the 'Cholan Poorva Pattayam' in the Madras Oriental Manuscript Library this Covanpudur later changed as 'Coimbatore' and it is by this name that it is known today, except in Tamil, in which the city is called Kovai. The rich black soil of the region has contributed to Coimbatore's flourishing agriculture industry and it is in fact, the successful growth of cotton has served as a foundation for the establishment of its famous textile industry.

               There are more than 50,000 small, medium and large scale industries and textile mills. Coimbatore is also famous for manifacture of motor pumpsets and different types of engineering products, due to which it has earned the title "The Detroit of the South". The development of hydro electricity from Pykara falls in 1930's led to the cotton cultivation in Coimbatore. The result has been a strong economy and a reputation as one of the greatest industrial city in the south and hence it is called 'The Manchester of South India".

               In Coimbatore there are about 50,000 small, medium and large scale industries.       About Pollachi       

              Pollachi is a town and a municipality in the Coimbatore district of the Tamil Nadu state of INDIA. It is located 40 km south of Coimbatore. It is an important commercial area in the region and has a big market for agricultural products. Coconuts and tender-coconuts are exported from here to all over India. coconuts and second biggest sandhai (market) in the country, the town has now become famous for cinema shootings and consequently a huge tourist attraction. Next to Coimbatore, Pollachi is the leading town in the district and an important commercial centre.

  About Udumalpet

                Udumalai also known as Udumalpet is a town and a municipality in Tirupur district, Indian state of Tamil Nadu.Poor Man's Ooty, as it is called, the Udumalpet town is one of the famous summer resorts of Tamil Nadu, surrounded by Mountains on three sides. Its name in the ancient days was "UDUMALAI" and due to its rural atmosphere, it was also named as Pettai. In latter period it was changed as "UDUMALAIPETTAI" in Tamil. The city was previously under Coimbatore district but was moved under the newly formed Tirupur district in October 2008. The change was opposed by many of the residents but it was not reverted back.

                In short known as Udumalai, the city is surrounded by the high mountains of Western Ghats on three sides. This Municipal town has a population of about 60,000. Udumalpet is an industrial town with number of textile, paper and farming related industries established here.

               Famous landmarks and monuments in and around the town includes Thirumoorthy Hills, which has the Thirumoorthy water reservoir that provides water supply to the town, Mariamman Temple, an old worshiping place in the town centre and Amaravathi Reservoir, across Amaravathi river which provides irrigation to the agricultural lands around the town. Both Thirumoorthy Hills and Amaravathi Reservoir provide recreational activities such as boating, fishing and hiking and attract tourists from other parts of the state.

                Udumalpet lies between the famous temple town of Palani (35 km) and Pollachi (28 km)on the National Highway No.209. Udumalpet is also connected by a metre gauge railway line. Udumalpet assembly constituency is part of Pollachi Lok Sabha constituency.
